04/05/05: Are Diamonds and Clubs going to
change colour?
A message just received from Nick Fahrer, who heads
Duplimate Australia, the company which sells duplicating machines
(electronic card sorters) within Australia:
QUOTE
"In the past weeks I have received some feedback from a few clubs in regard
to the new 5-bar code cards for the Duplimates.
In the last shipment of cards I received from
Sweden, the cards received were 4-colour, meaning the Spades remain black, the
Hearts remain red but the Diamonds are now orange and the Clubs are now grey.
I queried my supplier, Jannersten Forlag, who also
manufactures the Duplimates. This is the reply from Per Jannersten, the
company principal, when I asked him whether he could revert back to the
2-colour red/ black scheme we are familiar with:
It will be difficult for us to
revert to the same red/black for Clubs/Diamonds as for Hearts/Spades. This
is so because the new colour scheme is requested by the World Bridge
Federation and its zonal Federations.
Elderly people in
particular will appreciate the difference between the red/ orange and the
black/ grey colours .
I hope this clarifies any problems or
misunderstandings that may have arisen."

18/12/04: Wimbledon Concurrent
competition catches world interest!! 38 Clubs in
10 Countries took part in December's Wimbledon Concurrent competition!
It certainly is getting popular and I think we should be proud we were the first
club
outside England invited to play in this competition., with Garnett and Stan
winning the
East/West pairs standings (and Jan & Marie coming 3rd for North/South)
30/06/04: Wednesday
morning sessions abandonned!
Well we gave it a go! Three months down the track and no more than two
tables ever attended the Wednesday
morning group (sometimes only one!). The cost of the venue meant we ran at a
loss for 3 months and so this
venture has now come to an end (sob!) Special thanks goes to the following
people for their support over the period:
01/04/04: New
Session starting on Wednesdays!
No....it is not an April fool's joke!
ECBC is growing!
We are starting Wednesday morning sessions from Wednesday 14/4/04 at
10.00 am in the beautiful surrounds of the Whitehorse Aquatic Centre.
Please phone 9877-7213 or 0405-101729 to confirm your first
attendance at this new venue.
19/02/04: Weekly "Bridge Movies"
are here!
We now have weekly
"Bridge Movies" of the hands we play on Monday and Friday Nights!
The software incorporate scoresheets and will read any PBN file (Portable
Bridge Notation file)
and so can be used for all movies. It is particularly helpful in analysing hands
played at ECBC.
because of the incorporated scoresheets, however. To go "to the movies" click

10/01/04: Now
we are even more famous! (infamous?)
Now we are listed on the WORLD Bridge Federation links!
This means Interpol has easier access
to our results and can carry out investigations easier.....Click here to see
what they see!
The mug shots below are at the top of their "to do" list we hear!

are getting famous!
If you go to the Masterpoints Centre you will see our
internet site as a link! I am hoping this site puts a lot of the others to
shame......
it can only help our numbers grow! Click here:

05/12/03: Congratulations to Garnet, Stan, Esther
and Tony!

Tony
Garnet and Stan came 5th and Tony and
Esther came 28th!! The
following despatch concerning the top two "shady characters" has
been sent from our club to
all Interpol "Wanted Lists" (and Australian Bridge magazine): Garnet Edwards
and Stan Moore are returning champions!
They won the 1997 Australia Wide Spring Pairs and have now returned with another
outstanding
result in the 2003 competition....
Garnet started playing bridge after retiring as a
hospital manager. He learnt to play in 1966 at the RACV Club in Melbourne under
the late Jim Borin and joined Eastern Contract Bridge Club in 1997, forming a
partnership with Stan Moore.
Stan started playing bridge while serving in the army.
There were apparently three RUBBER
(flexible?) bridge players looking for a fourth and so
they roped Stan in (who knew nothing about bridge). The highlight of Stan's
Bridge "career" is his teaming up with Garnet, with whom he plays weekly (or
weakly, according to Stan...modest fellow).
This energetic pair play Standard American without too many
frills (how many frills is too many?) and that is probably the secret of their
success.
Congratulations! ECBC is proud that Stan and Garnet are the only Victorians in the top
ten!
